GameMazter was advertising his own minecraft server in ours. I temp muted him but I need some feedback whether it's a ban or demote.

Chances are hes only doing this to try it, and its probably hosted on his computer, which wont be on 24/7. I think this will disappear in a few days. If he does have an actual server, then i would forbid it as its a conflict of interest.

I would begin with the threat of a demotion to rookie, followed by a ban. the further up the ladder of ranks you are, the more power your words and adverting hold.

What i mean is, i don't care because to advertise another server would draw out randoms from our server who are clearly not interested in our server / who would want a person who skips around server to server to stay in AITM anyway?

anyway, hope i made sense there, it's a double edged blade in that instance, that these randoms may one day be respected aitm members and the like, and we don't want others stealing potential members.

I guess it comes down to perspective. Do we care enough to make a rule out of it, or do we not mind having this extra filter for potential members?
because that's all i see it as..

I wouldn't go too ape shit over it either way.
If someone does it constantly or as an enter-advertise-exit approach, i wouldn't allow it.. but if it's a pupil+ who is interested in branching out, i think that's.. well, okay.

Options:
1 We rule it out, and mute/kick/ban/demote anyone who does it..

2 We let it happen in the hopes that no one stupid enough will go *think of it as a way of judging newcomers..*

3 We set a rank/standard for whom can do it and get away with it.. I guess.

Ahh whatever, Personally i'm with 3. here.. not that i approve of it.

One thing that might be taken to consideration is the size of the server.
If it's a small, on a pc server, then maybe just discourage all around advertising if its coming from say... mason+? If its just asking couple of friends to join, then why not let it be if the server wont be online 24/7.
Incase of big, on a server, 24/7 server, strongly discourage everyone. Ban sub-mason players if its constant.
Instaban for pop in novices in all cases

Lower ranks : First warning, demote. Second, ban.
Higher ranks : First warning, mute. Second, demote.

I don't think it's okay to do it but it should be closer to #1. or #3. Meaning for #1. a random person or say someone we know (not that high of a rank) comes and starts doing that then: Warn/mute/kick/ban ect. However, if it's a higher rank say Artisan+ or Adept+ then if he/she would do that then we should give a little more consideration and warn more instead or straight" BOOM muted.
