Tiddly Winks 0 Posted April 29, 2010 A number of my friends recommended it to me, and while I read the back of the film, the story did not sound very thrilling, but it was on sale, so I got it. Anyway, any thoughts before I actually sit down and watch it? Should I watch it with tissues? Or grasping hold of my husband's arm cause it's scary? I am completely clueless about this film. The only thing I remember reading here was that it's good, which is why I bought the DVD.

Tiddly Winks 0 Posted April 29, 2010 I'm not sure if this is the sort of review you are looking for, but here goes.Tonight I watched the movie. Amazing film with lots of special affects. I was totally blown away by the Narnia-esque characters that I saw throughout the movie. They weren't centaurs and gryphans, but they were really fantastical creatures that immediately made me think of Jim Henson's Creature Shop, or the two already released Narnia films. Then at the end I realized why, Weta did the figure designs for both movies. That cleared things up. Beautiful, wild and amazing fantasy.Of course, that was a movie with the romance aspects that I liked. The main character was probably more real and believable than in any film I had seen recently. Of course, this film, in all its splendor and natural beauty kept reminding me of 'Dances With Wolves' simply with their paralleled plots. The devices were very much the same, but I found the whole alien essence to be more to my liking and the main character was better portrayed than Kevin Costner's portrayal in the other film. I think the fact that Jake Sully being in a wheelchair sort of gave the film a good premise to start with. The actor that did him in the human segments did a fantastic job with this. As a viewer I wanted to see him succeed throughout the whole movie and as he did, I was cheering for his success and sort of weepy when he failed.Sigourney Weaver being in the film was really amazing because her presence reminded me of when I watched her in 'Gorillas in the Mist'. It was strange, but at the beginning I was trying to figure out if she was a good guy or a bad guy. It was hard for me to pin her character down, but once I realized that she was good, I was really happy about that fact. The scene where Grace dies sort of 'foreshadowed' what would happen at the end of the film, maybe because I pay attention to details like that. Anyway, I knew that it was coming. The whole natural wonder premise touched on the environmentalist / tree hugger in me. I really felt a bond with the story, and strangely I cried more when the large tree was killed than when Grace died. There was something truly extraordinary about the people of Pandora and their spiritual connectedness to nature. It was evident when Jake had to kill the beast at one point and called it 'brother'. That was very touching to me and it outlined a sort of Native American culture that I heard tell of growing up.As I was watching this, I somehow felt as though it was tying back into 'Dances With Wolves'. The Native Americans have a strong connection to nature and the spiritual bond that connects all life to one another. This was something that really touched me as I have always felt that sort of 'bond' between human beings and nature.I truly thought the movie was magical and a very sweet love story. This is the sort of love story I could really get into. Of course, seeing the trigger happy antagonist get his just desserts was gratifying too. Wherever they filmed this one, I would sure like to see the place live and in person, though. Maybe one day we could go exploring there, but if I see any blue skinned individuals and they are snarling, I will hope that they are the size of smurfs. SashaGirl 0 Posted April 29, 2010 Tiddly, your review of Avatar was hauntingly beautiful! I haven't seen it yet. My husband and son have rented it to watch while I'm gone this weekend, and I'll watch it when I get home. Now I'm very anxious to see it! My son says that it was filmed on green screen, lots of CGI, and special effects. Isn't it amazing what they can do with computers these days?
