Armed man at my school!!

Recommended Posts

A lockdown at XXXXXX School in ?? has been lifted.

The school was locked down at about 2:40 p.m. PT Thursday after a man, who was not believed to be a student, was seen inside the school by several staff members. Staff did not recognize the man so they alerted the school liaison officer and the lockdown procedure was initated as a precaution.

The school was shut down for about two hours as police searched the building for the man. The Emergency Response Team was called in to help with the search.

Police said the response is not unusual under the circumstances.

Police say the man who sparked the lockdown has not been found, and it is not clear why he was in the school or if he posed a threat.

My sister is an office assistant at an elementary school. She has been in lockdowns a couple of times. We worry since the streets where the school is located aren't that safe. Once, when the kids were in recess, some gang member started shooting and all the kids had to immediately get down on the ground. Another time some gang member hid in the school but the police didn't find him. Another time there was a drug deal gone bad and the police were busting some criminal right across the street. I'm not exaggerating when I say that she experienced three lockdowns in a span of two weeks. On a lighter note, how fun is it to miss an exam or presentation because of unforeseen circumstances. Laughing

I won't start harping about my feelings about home schooling at all, but things like this make me seriously wonder. There has to be a way to protect those in school from nut cases, specifically hut cases with guns.

I guess there's a lot of issues around it though and blame should not rest entirely on schools. The place where it should rest is on elected officials as well as the laws that govern each place, but that's just my honest opinion.

Glad you are safe.

No one can get into my kids schools (thank goodness!)

They have locks on all the doors, and you have to be buzzed in, and even then only get into reception.....at my sons school you cant even get onto the school grounds as they have high security fencing which is always locked during the day, with a guard on the gate.

What you went through sounds really scary Luka...but at least it proves that if there was an issue at your school, then they have procedure in place to deal with it.

Lisa, so glad your kids are safe at their schools. Smile I had a public school education that I would not trade for all the tea in China. I learned so much about how to get along with other kids, and it was a fun time for me. I guess I can say that having gone to school during the eighties. The fashion may have been questionable (as we saw in PS) but it was good.

I think schools should have something like what you described. Some may say it sounds like a prison, but if it keeps the nasties outside, then I'm all for it. Children should be safe at school.

I may not be a parent, but I do think that child safety should be a priority for everyone since we were all children once upon a time.
