  4. FPLR DRIVER INTERVIEW:: Mullen Motorsport

Today I had the surprise pleasure of chatting for a short time with Chris Mullen, driver of the #28 Queenswood Service Center 2004 Honda Civic of Mullen Motorsports in the Disklok Civic Cup series. He was able to sit down with me and give me thoughts concerning not only the series he races in, but it's video game counterpart.

Reporter- 'Thank you for taking the time to chat with us. This Forza Pro League Racing Civic Cup series has been slowly gaining the eye of the eSport world, so much so that drivers such as yourself have started to take notice. How did you find out about the guys at FPLR and their replica series?'

Chris- "I first found out about FPLR on Facebook when the Civic Cup Official page shared some information regarding the series."

Reporter- 'Do you feel that racing in games is getting closer and closer to the feel of being there in person? And likewise do you feel that racing in these type of games help someone drive the car better in real life?'

Chris- "Yes definitely! I'm not a big gamer myself, but my brother has a pretty good set up which I usually use before each event to learn the circuits etc.
With it being my first season in circuit racing, I need as much seat time as possible and I feel with a decent wheel set up I really can get up to speed alot quicker on race weekends."

Reporter- 'Excellent. Tell us about the Disklok Civic Cup series you race in so far. How has your season been shaping up?'

Chris- "The Disklok Civic Cup is by far one of the most competitive championships I have raced in. The racing is intense and you always find yourself in some kind of battle whichever end of the grid you start at!
I've had a steady start to the season with a mixed bag of results, my best being p10 in race 2 at Snetterton leaving me p14 in the championship."

Reporter- 'What would you say is the most challenging thing about racing in these FWD Hondas, in both formats?'

Chris- "The most challenging thing for me is getting the Civic set up right. Without a good stable car its hard to put in a good quali time and then your starting on the back foot for the race. Finding that 'perfect' set up even on a game is very challenging but its one of the most important things when racing in either of the formats."

Reporter- 'Good point. That about wraps it up. Any final thoughts?'

Chris- "I think that the FPLR Civic Cup series is great and can see it growing from strength to strength. It's great watch the Live stream and see the cars in the same livery as what we have in the Disklock Civic Cup. Not only is it good for the gamers but its also great from a sponsorship point of view!
I wish the FPLR all the best and you never know i may even make an appearance myself at some point through the season."

  5. FPLR CIVIC CUP DRIVER SPOTLIGHT::

    Dave Buky

Greeting one and all to a new segment that I will be doing. From time to time, I will conduct a interview with random drivers in the series in order to help introduce you to and get to know better the drivers that run in this Forza Motorsport 7 series.

Today I had the privilege of speaking to not only a driver of the series, but someone who races the real series as well! He is the driver of the #51 MTEC Brakes entry Dave Buky!

    ____________________________________________

Reporter - 'Thank you for taking the time to conduct this interview. For starters, and for the benefit of all of the people that are unfamiliar with you or the series you run in, can you tell us about yourself?'

DB - "My name is Dave. I'm 30 years old and have a big passion for motorsport and anything related to it. I currently race in the Disklok Civic Cup championship in my MTEC Brakes sponsored EP3. This will be my 5th year competing after winning the last of the class A championship back in 2016."

Reporter - 'How did you get involved with racing in the Disklok series and also the FPLR replicant series on Forza?'

DB - "I was introduced to founder of CC Shaun Woods and also co owner of SW Motorsports around 5 years ago. It was at this time my friend and soon to be championship rival Andrew Hough got me into the Civic Cup and ever since I have been hooked! It really is a great, highly competitive, cost effective series and offers sponsors a great opportunity to promote their brand and me the chance to race! I am one of the longest standing competitors in the series and have a keen interest in anything relating to it. As soon as I heard about the fast growing e-sports championships and the fact we could see our own cars and livery on a computer screen, how could I say no!"

Reporter - 'Who could say no indeed. LOL
Now, we know that nothing can replace the actual feeling of sitting in a race car, feeling the engine rumbling and the sensation of racing around a real race track. But do you draw comparisons to both the real world race series and racing in a game like Forza or iRacing? Do you believe that nowadays we're getting closer to getting that same feel with online gaming?'

DB - "I really do and I believe that if someone is good at racing in such a 'real life sim game' like Forza, iRacing and Project Cars, then given some time, they will be able to transfer the skills into a real car. Quite a few of us Civic Cup lads use sim racing to practice or at least get use to the circuit and all say the real life feeling from a decent sim wheel is comparable to real life racing. Myself, Ben Sharpe, Dan Reason and also former champion Rob Baker have known to have some good races online! You don't get a feeling of danger or the effects of weight transfer through a SIM wheel and even with the motion seats it's still not quite the same... but online gaming has certainly come on leaps and bounds since I was playing SEGA Rally with my dad on the SEGA Saturn!"

Reporter - 'Awesome. So you are saying it is possible to take what you have learned irl (tuning and whatnot) and transition it into the game and visa versa? What do you think your biggest challenge will be?'

DB -"I believe that you can learn a lot from sim racing which will put you in a good position or at least a better position when the chance comes to race a car in real life. The main challenge will be having the time to get a 'car tune' that works with the sim wheel and getting the best from the car in the game."

    Reporter - 'Okay. Last question.
What do you expect from the series and what are you looking forward to the most? And do you have any final thoughts that you would like to share?'

DB - "I'm really looking forward to seeing a lot of the replica Civic Cup cars racing on an online platform across the web. This is brilliant for the championship and also sponsors that are involved. If the racing is as good as real life, I expect it can only go from strength to strength! It would be great to see in the future some live coverage of the races, more media from FLPR (which they are doing a fantastic job so far) and maybe a split between use of wheel or use of controller...just so everyone can get involved but be racing fairly as thats what most want to see."

I really enjoyed conducting this interview. Special thanks to Buky for taking the time out of his busy schedule to do this interview. If you would like to check him out, you can visit his driver page in the link below:
