"ANODYNE" Lyrics & Discussion

Recommended Posts

I found these lyrics on a lyrics website - don't know if they're entirely accurate, but it's a starting point anyway!

Baby, it's our hearts' slow beating
That make us grow old
I mean to say there's no one helping
We're digging our own hole

I'm reading your words
They're scrawled on the page
They lay here in silent rage
I'll hold you to this for as long as I breathe
Much more than whispers

If I ever found a one leaf clover
It would be you
Wishing that such heights were lower
And nothing is new

Citing your verse
It couldn't sound worse
The black recital I did rehearse
We all die alone as I'm clenching this phone
I can't imagine a slowing hearse

How many times will I play the hero
How many lies before it's true
How many times will we clock out at zero
How many tries before we're through
How many lives 'til another you

The scars are slowly healing
The lips have regained feeling
The obstacles are kneeling
The final wax is sealing
The great white ships are sailing
The feet have left their railing
The four last hooves are hailing

How many times will I play the hero
How many lies before it's true
How many times will we clock out at zero
How many tries before we're through
How many lives 'till another you

Baby, it's our hearts' slow beating
That make us grow old
I mean to say there's no one helping
We're digging our own hole

I heard David / DWEEB sing this song 4 nights ago and it's still haunting me. It's an AMAZING song lyrically and melodically and it's seeped into my bones where I don't think I could shake it if I wanted to. I haven't digested it enough to post an interpretation (or 2 or 4) but I hope to soon.

AMAZING song. Awww Love

My favorite lyrics from this song:
"I'm reading your words
They're scrawled on the page
They lay here in silent rage"

Especially "they lay here in silent rage." For some reasont that lyric is just really interesting and ... i dont know how to describe it!

I just love this song!
That is all

I like songs that have a title that never appears in the song itself. Makes ya think a little and wonder how it came to be. If Dave had a hand in writing this, which we all know he did....I'm not surprised that this is just amazing. I have this constantly playing on and on in my head like a broke jukebox and I have to hear it several times daily. I can only imagine how I'll feel hearing this live. Thud!

This song is SO intriguing! What was in that letter? My current interpretation is maybe the letter is from someone battling an addiction, endangering their life if not outright suicidal, asking to be saved again and again, skirting death, making him think about mortality and inevitability and... gah! I might have an interpretation in another direction tomorrow, but that's where my head is on this song right now.

Those lyrics look about right to me!

This part, lyrically but also poetically (?), has always blown my mind.

The scars are slowly healing
The lips have regained feeling
The obstacles are kneeling
The final wax is sealing
The great white ships are sailing
The feet have left their railing
The four last hooves are hailing

I'm not sure I have the right words to describe what happens when hearing this song live. It's like a lightning bolt of emotions being forced right through your heart and mind. I think but I can't remember that I just stood there after the initial OMG scream with my mouth hanging open looking like an idiot for the entire song.

Yeah, Barb, that's a pretty good description of it. I said it's like the song engulfs me and seeps right away all the way into my bones. It's totally entrancing.

I changed my profile to list it as my favorite song now. Awww Love

This has always been one of my favorite MWK songs. And I wasn't sure about hearing Dave sing it because I was so used to Andy's voice. But holy shit, it was beyond amazing! Just like you said Stacy, haunting. The lyrics are so incredible. And I like the way the music seems to build in the beginning. I really hope he throws this into the AC setlist!!

I saw this video on youtube and immediately watched it like 5 times...I could not stop. He had drawn me into this other world....wherever he went when he sang this, he took me with him, and I was floored. I CANNOT imagine being in the same room when he sings this...I don't know if I would be able to stand it...hands down THE most haunting, beautiful song I have ever heard in my entire life.

I can tell you - if you ever are there to see it live, it will haunt you even MORE. This song has, like, sunk into my bones where it will reside for the rest of my life.

Razz I was SO STOKED to see it on the playlist in Knoxville...I mean, so much so, that the panties were ready to come off, I was getting ready....and then I got shafted!!! ARGH!!! I would have been squealing like a banshee (sp?) if he had played it in Knox. *sigh* Next time....has to be....3rd time has to be the charm!!! And that goes for finally getting to meet him too! Fingers Crossed!!!

It could be. Or attempted suicide more like it. It's about someone who is self-destructive at any rate, and there are a lot of ways to be self-destructive. The words scrawled on the page sound like a suicide note. And the "black recital" verse about him imagining a eulogy. "How many times will I play the hero" to me is him repeatedly saving someone from her- or himself. How many lies are how many times the person says they're going to kill themselves... or says they're going to get clean or sober. "How many lives 'til another you?"

I still don't believe it's coincidence that Anodyne reappeared the day after we posted that it had been a whole 43 days since we heard it. Suspect

Dave, if you're reading, please sing it at Northampton or New Haven! Please!

Wow... the song is so beautiful. But now I'm going to hear it a whole different way

Well what's great about all their songs (MWK, Axium, David.... and actually, probably most songs in general now that I think about it) is that the music is up to your own personal interpretation. So who knows what it was about when it was written.... but it can be about different things to each of us. *shrug* Smile

Dave, if you're reading, please play it at Stacy's shows, as well as May 8th, 28th, 30th, and 31st. That's not too much to ask is it? scratch

Please!

I will second the May 31st request. Don't make us start a petition, Dave.

Cuz we will. Oh yes, we will.

And I will give you all a fair warning....if I hear the first few bars of that...my panties will no longer be on my body. Fair warning.

They seem to have a mind of their own when that song is played. I would have NO control over them if it was sung at a live show. None. At all.

lmao - Anodyne doesn't have that effect on my panties. It's more a soul-transporting song to me.

If he ever, EVER plays "Let Go" however,...

LOL Angie! However, Anodyne is not a song that makes my panties fall off. Laughing It's a song that makes me cry, or sit there in a complete daze, or bow at their feet for writing such amazing lyrics. But mostly all three of those.

The panties come off during Bar-ba-sol, KOTN, etc. So no worries there. Great

It's not so much the lyrics....its his mother effin voice when he sings it....holy crikey...I would be better off just not wearing any at all to my next show. Just in case. Thud_old

Hahaha!!! Kinda like that god awful country song "tequila makes her clothes fall off"...

"Anondyne makes her panties come off"

Or how about..."Play me some Anondyne and I'll show you my panties. Or lack thereof."

Ok, that was dumb. Suspect

I had a different look at the song too, and you are right we all do look or listen to a song in a different way that other people do. I guess that what make their music so great.

I have to say Stacy, it's quite amusing to read your deep song interpretations while you have Dave in spandex as your avi. Razz
