smilinjack 0 Posted December 19, 2010 Bizarre really- screen just went off and then nothing, fan was running, couldn't actually turn it off. Long story short, looks like the mobo or CPU is toast. Spiked the HDD so I can't recover a lot of stuff. Back on my old XP tower unit now but shitloads of catching up & recovery to try & do. All I can say is thank fuck I don't have a gas oven-I've about had enough one way or another.

smilinjack 0 Posted December 21, 2010 You can't keep a good man down-in a rare moment of forward planning I had bought a second tower unit like the one that crapped out. Fitted my defunct drive and after a long time the autorepair feature actually worked! Why it didn't do so when I tried another tower unit is beyond me, and frankly my dear I don't give a damn. I've got all my pics & emails & other shit I hadn't backed up so it's a happy ending. Back of the net

firehawk 0 Posted December 22, 2010 i hate XP. My laptop has been away for 3 weeks being repaired and is back tomorrow. In the mean time, I've been using my old knackered acer running XP. It's sooooooo slow in comparison and freezes every so often.
stantheman 0 Posted December 22, 2010 thats very brave of you mate sending it away with that much porn in its memory
smilinjack 0 Posted December 22, 2010 Just been trying to find what went wrong. I've reassembled the old unit with a sacrificial hard drive but it won't boot. Fan comes on straightaway but no little beep, no BIOS screen. Looks like a shagged mobo. Ah well, I've now got a few spares. Nice SATA optical drive & USB card reader etc.

It might still be deep in there I suppose but oh well. I just hope it comes back without white stains on the keys

smilinjack 0 Posted December 23, 2010 Power supply checked in another machine, worked no problem. Did wonder about the CMOS backup, prob worth a bit of a look. Having said which it happened during operation, normally CMOS failures occur on startup.

Shouldn't worry there mate, gas ovens are really very simple and don't generally break down, perhaps only the spark ignition but then at least you can always light it with a match
