Jammed/seized ZZR1100

Recommended Posts

Just had a phone call from a friend of my brother in law's. He's got a
C3 1100, left it idling while he put his gloves on, and the engine
stopped with a slight metallic clonk as he put it. Now the engine won't
turn over on the starter (relay is clicking) and he can't pull the
clutch in properly. He wondered if it seized but I don't see why that
would stop the clutch from operating. I didn't know if there's a starter
clutch assembly in these bikes, as I know from Bandit experience that
the starter gear can break and jam everything up. Any input gratefully
received before I go to have words with it, probably next weekend.

Downloaded the manual & my prime suspect is the alternator drive chain tensioner. Sits slap bang next to the clutch basket so if it takes a dump could easily jam into the side, lock the plates as well as the engine. Smile

on my bandit 12 the alternator drive gear shattered when i first aquired it, could possible be that if its the oil cooled engine but judging by you saying about the chain its probably a newer engine, i would bet youre not far off the money Smile

I went down today for a bit of a look but didn't get too far as there are two fasteners rusted in so couldn't even get the fairing off. He's going to get RAC to recover him to a dealer for a bit of a look. Now I've seen it "in the flesh" though I'm sure I'm right. Clutch is obviously being jammed by something & the engine won't turn. A tenner says the alternator chain tensioner is jammed in the side of the clutch basket. Smile
