fr499y 0 Posted August 13, 2012 Any one got any experience with splitting the engine on a thunderace? Its the lower case that needs replacing but i want to confirm if the head/barrels have to come off to remove the lower case or not as no one seems to know, some say you do on another forum, some say you don't. fr499y 0 Posted August 13, 2012 Turns out the 'small hole' in the side case wasn't small, can't be repaired. got another one to go on but could do with finding out how to split the bottom without touching the head/cams etc if possible lol. Looks like at some point, someones broken the mounts going from the bottom ( just above sump sadly ) into the upper engine casing and tried to bodge it with JB weld!!!! hopefully it will be worth doing in the end! madsod 0 Posted August 13, 2012 Most Jap engine you can take the bottom of with out touching the top of the engine the problem will be the crank and shell,s as each pair of engine casing are a set so you will need to use the top and the bottom and then all new shells to suit ,
Oldfart 0 Posted August 13, 2012 usually the crank and main bearing caps are retained in the upper half. the bottom casing does not normally clamp the crankshaft. So you wont disturb the crank or bearings. To split the cases dont use a screwdriver as you will damage the gasket face. Look for jacking holes (threaded holes with no bolts in them or cutouts so you can use a drift or soft mallet. Failing that a thin broad home made wedge.
