  1. Wife and I went to a fleamarket on the weekend, so I rifled through all the buckets of kids toys I saw...... %^%$#@# pain in the &^%$$# that little diecast cars always make their way to the BOTTOM of the tub....
After wasting most of my time on finding all those crappy chinese plastic cars you get in packets of 50 for a buck, I finally found something worthwhile.........
The oldest cars I have found so far..........

My favorite is the Dream Van XGW (1985), some kid has hand painted it a couple of times, but the glass looks free of cracks and the casting is straight, and I can't wait to RestoMod it Very Happy

    The other oldies are:
    Torino Stocker from 1979

    Mirada Stockers from 1982

    Silver Bullet from 1985

    Best fleamarket haul I've had.

  2. Purple Crawler

This was my entry in a comp where everyone had to use the Matchbox "Jungle Crawler" casting, but I ended up using 4 different Hotwheels cars to build it.

Being more of a HotRod than 4x4 fan, I converted it using a "Pass'n Gasser" front clip, "40's Woody" rear guards and running boards,
a "Way2Fast" engine, "Custom 66 GTO Wagon" interior and a set of Maisto wheels.

Paint is purple nail polish with foil for the chrome details.

It did terrible in the competition, getting 2 of the 45 votes, tieing for 7th/8th place out of 11 entries.

Despite it's abysmal competition performance, I like it a lot....
the shape feels right and the details of the Matchbox casting suit it really well, and purple has become my favorite colour.
With hindsight I can see that I went too big on the wheels, which also made it sit too high off the ground.

    Thanks for looking.

  3. This Boneshaker was my entry for the "March Madness 2011" comp at Chillis Diecast Corner.
The rules for the "mild" class were relaxed and allowed anything you wanted, but no alterations to the casting or base.

The standard "mild" mods are a repaint with candy flames, chrome trim and a JADA wheel swap.
Additional "March Madness" mods are engine/exhaust swap from a "Rolling Thunder", gearstick

.......and my favorite mod on this Shaker.... a new skull at the front.

It won 1st place out of 5 entries in the "Mild" class.

    Thanks for looking

  4. Kevan has been my inspiration in this hobby since I started, I am grateful that I got to hang out with him at KustomKon2010 and I am honoured to call him a friend.
His new "BioMech" paintjobs are amazing, you can't see it in photos, but by airbrushing the silver from different directions, he gets a holographic 3d effect giving a real illusion of depth in the paintjob..... amazing to see.
Kevan was inducted into the "Diecast Hall of Fame" in 2010, and deservedly so.

  5. Mid-engined Prostock S10

This was my entry for an online competition on another site, we could do anything we wanted, as long as the casting was the Prostock S10.

I cut a hole in the back to fit the engine from the MidMill, added ignition wires, fuel hoses and detail painted the engine, fitted an interior from a Maisto car and the wheels came from a Jada.
I painted it a dark red nail polish over a black base, and did multilayerd candy flames on the front, and finished by detailing all the lights and the grill.

There were 10 entries and this one ended up in a tie for 2nd.

    Thanks for looking

  7. Mild KustomKon Dairy

This Dairy Delivery was built for KustomKon 2010, the only one of my 8 entries that was built

specifically for the KustomKon custom competition.

To maximize my chances, I chose:
Popular casting - the Dairy Delivery
    Popular paint - flames
    Popular flames - Truefire
    Popular paint - Candy colours
Popular colours - bright blue through purple, red, orange to yellow
Popular finish - as smooth as glass as I could get
Popular rollers - Chrome wheels with rubber tires
Popular details - Lights, grill, interior and chassis

and when the judging was done, it got 2nd Amateur Mild.

As happy as I am to have won this prize, my greatest prize was when Kevan Bence said that some would

think that this Dairy was one of his..... I consider that a mighty big compliment.

  8. Blue Dragon

    Long read coming up....

My automotive interest is pretty much limited to cars of the "Chrome Bumper" era... which came to an end in the mid 70's, which is why this HotWheels "Asphalt Assult" is a most unlikely casting for me to Kustomize, so here is the story behind it....

September 2010 I was on holiday in Malaysia, and added a couple of extra days in KL before going home, so I could meet up with friends from the HWC Malaysia forum at the weekly get-together at the sunday Amcorp market. One of the guys I had a good chat with was fellow customiser Cham2020, and I was surprised and honored to be given a RAOK by him..... an Asphalt Assult with a fade paintjob and what I consider his signiture customising..... lots of detailing.... engine, lights, intercooler, interior etc.

One day, after I was back home, I was in the supermarket looking through the HW pegs and saw an old Asphalt Assult hanging there, and decided I would buy it and use it for a custom for Cham.

Although I don't really like modern cars, especially if they are covered in "brand name" stickers, I have a lot of respect for the custom paint of the highend tuner cars, so that is the route I decided to take with my kustom... killer mural, carbon fibre and bling wheels.

As usual, I decided to do a "Mild" custom... paint, decals, foil and a wheelswap. Colour choice was easy... work with the colour of the glass... so it had to be blue - and from the very start, I decided that I wanted an oriental dragon as the graphic.

The casting was stripped, preped, primed and sprayed silver and the base and wing painted black. Carbon fibre and dragon decals were applied to the body, the dragon faded in with black, and the rest of the body sprayed candy blue, then foil was applied to the lights, the rears painted over with red candy. The top of the rear wing was painted silver and carbon fibre decal applied. The interior is great for detailing.... NOS bottles, amps, speakers, seatbelts, and the visible engine too.... plug wires, intake and exhaust pipes, cam covers etc, all detailed with a brush and toothpick.

Then the plan changed...... by a fortunate co-incidence, I was able to attend the DCS 2010 KustomKon diecast convention, and decided to enter the "Blue Dragon" in the custom contest.

I attacked the base, detailing the intercooler, exhaust, swaybars, driveshafts with paint, and the exhaust tip with chrome foil, and selected a wide set of Maisto wheels with discs for the wheelswap, and put it all back together. Done.

When I got to KustomKon 2010, I entered it in the Amateur Mild class...... and it won 1st place.

I am honoured and happy that my work was so well received and appreciated, but now find that I can't make myself part with the "Blue Dragon"... afterall... it won 1st and took me from the amateur class to Pro, in the company of so many of the customisers I so highly respect.

So... I will now have to build something else for my friend Cham.

    Thanks for looking

  9. Dark Water

A bit of a story behind this one.
By winning 1st place in a couple of monthly custom competitions on another site, I qualified to enter the final comp for 2010,when it started I spent a bit of time brainstorming and sketching my ideas for an entry and eventually decided on a set, and I started cutting up a couple of castings. Everyday life was busy, and then we also had to get everything ready for the holiday we started mid November, so spare time was short.....and then I was told that I was to join another guy from my work at a conference in Vegas, so there went another 2 weeks of building time.
Only one thing to do...... toss everyhing done so far into a box and put it aside for another day and find something I would have time to finish.... so it had to be as "mild" as possible.
When I found my first 2010 H2Go everything fell into place...... a race boat team set! The H2GO on a scratchbuilt trailer towed by a 77 Dodge van.

Since the set had to do with water and I have always found the refractive patterns made by waves beautiful, that was how I decided to paint the set.... blue candy with silver highlights fading to deep, dark water..... which is also the name of this set... "Dark Water".

All 3 parts of the set were airbrushed blue candy over a silver base, airbrushed silver refraction pattern using a homemade stencil cut from acetate, with the front of the van and back of boat and trailer faded to black, and everyhing clearcoated with 2 part automotive clear.

    77 Dodge Van:
A couple of reasons I why chose this as the tow vehicle... I like this casting, the scale fits the H2Go better than a car or wagon and the interior looks great when detailed and is easily visible. Apart from the trailer hitch it is a mild build - detailed interior, tail lights are red candy over foil and the grill is black washed and a wheelswap from Maisto.

    H2Go:
Always liked the H2Go ever since I found a couple of the First Editions, but couldn't make myself strip them, so I'm happy it's out as a plain old mainline now. Like the van, apart from the drilled out exhaust pipes, it's a mild build - painted the instruments black and used foil on the bar over the glass.

    Trailer:
Scratch built. Has to do a bit of research on this one, as I had absolutely no idea what a trailer for a cat powerboat looked like. I didn't want to spend the coin on the (as always in Australia) ridiculously overpriced hobby shop brass and aluminium, so I used florists wire instead (cheap, bendable, and with a little bit of work it polishes up ok too) ,paper staples to hold up the centre rails, and the plastic tube from a cotton bud for the axle tubes and a set of Maisto wheels.

Unfortunately it will not be entered in the competition it was built for, as it turned out that the DCS KustomKon 2010 conference/convention was on the weekend before my work convention starting on the Monday, so I saw what will probably be my only opportunity to ever attend a HW or DCS convention, and decided to bring whatever I could to enter in the KustomKon custom competition..... and that included this set... in the end I am glad that I did, as it won 1st Amateur Sets, but this also means that I can no longer enter it in the final on the other site because it has been seen elsewhere.

    Thanks for looking.

  10. One more from my first series of 10 cars, this time the Dixie Challenger.

The hood on this casting is so big and flat I thought I'd try something new.

    Another mild build:
Black base paint with metallic True Fire
    Foil trim
    Maisto wheels

    Thanks for looking.
