A serious question i need help with

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone..

Im not going to metion any names or places but i need someone who might know the answer to help me out here.

Is there any laws againt a family running a youthgroup?
I mean as in all the helpers and people who run the youthgroup are related in some way or another.

I would have thought this would have been against some kind of law because if anything happens to the children as in abuse or something, Then most likley the family is going to stick together through anything?

Does anyone know anything that they can tell me about this...is kind of urgent =/

Thanks

I am somehow familiar with that, In our country we don't have law, but before a child or certain teen can join the youthgroup, they need to have parent consent.

I'm not sure but I think anybody who runs a youth group has to have police clearance first ,...they can't just set one up and run it without permission,

What age group are they?

If they are over 8's then all the leaders need are the police check...it doesnt matter if they are releated or not Sad

If there are under 8's there then I'm sure there are extra checks that need to be done...Im not sure if OFSTED would have to be involved as well if there are under 8's there

I can find out for you hun, but wont be until Tuesday when I do my course x

I think it will be same, before some one can run a youthgroup they should have clearance first( from the town municipal, I think )and have some consent and approval by the parent of the child.

I don't think people off the street can simply form a youth group. It sounds rather suspect to me, especially in this day and age with so much happening in the news. I don't know the laws surrounding it, but if I was a parent, I would be gettitng all sorts of red flags going up about it.

Most youth groups that I know up are affiliated with some sort of established institution, a church or a civic group. One cannot just form a group, they need to go through proper channels and get the 'rights' to do so. If they are legit and the people running it are related, then it would be up to the individual parents if they want their child involved.

Hope that helps.

Aww thanks Lisa that would be amazing. They are 5-12 year olds.
Could you ask what checks they would need to run the youthgroup and also can there only be family running it, or does it have to be a mixture of family running it =)

Thanks again =D

yes that helps alot. The thing is. They are police checked but the thing i really wanted to know was could there just be family running it. Why i say that is because if anything happens to a child, Like it gets badly injured or physically or mentally abused etc...then family would stick together wouldnt they? There should be a law against it somewhere to say that ALL of the people running and helping CANT be family...There should be atleast 1-2 people who are not in the family =/
Thats what i would have said anyways....

youth clubs are very popular in the UK and very safe.

Everyone running them are checked by the police, and they are a faulous way of giving kids something to do, so they are not just walking the street. They are also a great way of building a child confidence.

I personally think youth clubs are much safer than your child just being with a group of friends, at least this way you have adults supervising them at all times

and that's exactly the part i don't like.. it's like a bubble OR they don't act naturally as they feel watched... I would personatly hate it.. But that's just me..

I've just spoken to the manager at my local surestart childrens center

There is no law stating that a family cannot run a youth club. However there should be a strict complaints procedure in place, which gives you a higher authority to complain to if you are not happy with the way they have dealt with something. Every parent should be given a copy of this procedure.

As there are children under the age of 8 then by law they have to be ofsted registered. This also means they have regular checks and evaluations by ofsted.
If you have any concerns about this youth club then ofsted are the ones to take you concerns to. You can make a report anonymously, you dont have to make an official complaint, or even give your name, just tell them what you are worried about and they have to look into it

At the end of the day, if its something that has worried one parent then it needs sorting...it could happen again

Here are the ofsted numbers ( I would ring the general one first just to check they are registered )

General : 0300 123 1231
Complaints: 0300 123 4666

If you dont want to do it yourself, feel free to pm me all the details and I'll help you out, or if you have any more questions the surestart manager said I can go back to her any time x
