Thanksgiving Day, Thanksgiving Day is a holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada, observed as a day of gratitude to God for everything good that happened during the year on this day people give thanks for celebrations and prayers .

The Origins of the holiday

The first Thanksgiving Day in New England were festivals of thanksgiving to God, due to good harvests per year. For this reason, the Day of Thanksgiving is celebrated in fall after the harvest has been made and is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November.

The first was held in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the settlers who founded the village in 1620. After bad harvests and a harsh winter, the colonists had a good Crops of corn in the summer of 1621. By order of the governor of the village, and in honor of this achievement from the previous harvest, a festival was marked early in the Autumn of 1621. The men of Plymouth killed ducks and turkeys. Other foods that were part of the menu were fish and corn. about ninety Indians also participated in the festival. Everyone ate outdoors at large tables.

However, for many years, the Day of Thanksgiving was not established as national Feriana, being observed as such only in certain states, like New York, Massachusetts and Virginia. In 1863, the then U.S. President Abraham Lincoln declared that the 4th Thursday of November would be the National Day of Thanksgiving.

But in 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt instituted that day would be celebrated on the third week of November, in order to help trade, increasing the time available for advertising and shopping before Christmas (The Age, it was considered inappropriate to advertise of products on sale before Thanksgiving Day). As Roosevelt's statement was not mandatory, 23 states adopted the measure of Roosevelt and 22 states did not, with the remainder taking both Thursdays (at the third and fourth weeks of November) and Thanksgiving Day. The U.S. Congress, to resolve the impasse, then instituted the Thanksgiving Day would be celebrated on Thursday definitely the fourth week of November and would be a national holiday.
