Released on 1969 Hotwheels casting line up. Born to reflect Southern California ( Mattel office) hippie and groovy trend of '69 surfing fever and taking Volkswagen as people popular choice transport. Mattel teamed up with So-Cal Custom Shop to design Volkswagen Beach Bomb. Earlier prototype VWBB has 8 window, Spectraflame color and twin duo color surfboards poking out at back window ( VWBBRL( rear loader ). But the designer, Howard Rees and Larry Wood then realize that the protype is proof failure at hotwheels track. This as earlier Mattel objective is to made Hotwheels casting and hotwheels sizzlers (track) is equally popular as world favorite toys. The prototype car is too narrow, tipped easily on loops as top roof is too heavy and this not working well at coners too .The surfboards given Hotwheels Super Chargers a hard time. The designers then modified the VWBB by cutting the roof and given sunroof for better looking and lights on the loop. The base is given more weight and they added width by extending side fenders to accommodate track width and running and provide more storage for more surfboards ( VWBBSL side loader ) For unknown numbers the prototype is painted pink and given to Mattel employees. For the last decade only 2 pcs of VWBBRL is known existed in this world ( some say more than 20 but not know the location ) . One sold for US 70,000.00 ( the seller buy the Dodge Viper the next day ). One more is now rest peacefully as grace people subject at Petersen Automobile Exhibit. On 2002,2003 and 2006 Mattel resurrected VWBB as Hotwheels Beach Bomb Too. Debuted on holiday of 2002 at Red Line Club. Again Mattel producing 275 Holiday Pink Beach Bomb Too and distributed to Mattel employees ( Malaysia employee must get one ) This is Beach Bomb Too Left is 2002 Series One PINK! ( if loose 100% as 275 employees!) bearing issue no of 080xx/10,000. Right is 2002 Holiday Car Red ( or Magenta ) 3 clrs available ( no pink ) bearing issue no of 071xx/10,000.
