A different way to rise the ass on a GSX1400 not using Jackup kit :)

Hi!

I have always wanted to raise the rear a bit so in 2009 i bought a jackup kit before me and the wife headed for Italy with the bike look like a full touring one Laughing .
And with all that load it was perfect specially in the hairpins up in the alps thumbs .

But when we got home and i started to ride more solo i noticed that the chain started to eat on the rubber proctection on the swingarm and that the bike waved her ass like a maniac in high speed Surprised .

So i take the jackup kit away and sold it to someone in Finland.

Then i use the bike as it was build until a member of GSX1400.org (Bigone) posted up a thread about a different way to go so i pm'd him about the cad drawings of what he have done.
It only raise the hight with 18mm instead of 40mm for the jackup kit.

This was somewhere in the end of last year , but about a mounth ago i started to talk to people about bending new mountings for the shocks and the awnser i got was they cant do that in their machine ,this made me even more stubborn to solwe it and i did in a old bending machine wth some metal profiles to help me make something looking like this.



Then after some cutting and fileing it looked ok so i removed the swingarm on the bike



Then put it in the wise



and then with mutch nervousity (i did not have a spare swingarm and i'm going to UK in the end of this mounth)

After i cut the mountings of i removed all of the old weld's so i got a good surface to weld the new ones.
Then test mounted the new ones with a jigg to get it in the same position like the old ones.



then of to a friend of mine that works as a welder and got him to weld them to place.



Then i did a polish of the mountings for now but i think i going to powdercoat the swingarm next winter.
Mounted the bike together and noticed that the chain was f**kt ? so i have to mount a new one before we hit the road to UK.
so this how it looks now

Then last weekend i testride the bike both with me solo and together with my wife ,turn in a little quicker now but it's not wawing it's ass att high speed and i get the riding hight when we go two now so i dont have to be afraid to pinch my fot between the ground and the gearchanger Wink .

Great job Mavrick, bike looks better jacked up and prob steers and drops into corners quicker too. thumbs

it have been a quite nervous day's before it all was put together again, due to the ride over to UK starting here in 16 of may.
But i think i work better with some pressure Laughing .

Thats great !

Good and bad sides,
its not a ten minute bolt on
and its not easy to change your mind and return to stock,
and cant swap between different height blocks.

Looks much neater though,
and I like it better than the blocks.

I may still try raiser blocks and if im 100%
happy get the arm done,
and i'll keep my eye open for a spair arm,
(mates braking a 14 to build a go-cart)

Talking to a couple of folks who had lifted
the tail, a couple of points they made were....

# The gearing sprocket sizes will effect how
tight the chain is over the arm, smaller front
(on mine) isnt great.


# Raising the rear makes the soft front even
more noticeable and it really needs to be
looked at to firm it up.


Neither are personal experience,
just things i've bee told to keep an eye on.

Maybe a 20mm bolt on lift would be the best
of both worlds.

Was out with a guy on todays ride who a mechanic
/ engineer / bikeshop owner.

Got talking about jack-up blocks and modding swingarms.

His opinion was that GSX14 rear shocks are pretty
average anyway, so when he replaces them he
specifies "+20mm" or "+25mm" in length when ordering.

He's going to get me a price.

Might be a very simple solution.
Better shockers and better ride height in one
and easily reversable if required.

sounds like the easiest option and for putting back to standard too thumbs

If doing that at the back will the front cope or is it progressive springs at the front ?

Im certainly going to get the front looked
at and upgraded.

I ride with a couple of lads with 14's
and it seems to be recommended.
Front seems to be a little soft and vague to me.

I know they are big heavy low tech bikes,
and they will never be truly "sporty"
but for two up use or when the pace is turned
up a little I feel it could be better.
