  6. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8376392.stm Would you spend £10 on a virtual sofa shaped like a pair of lips? It may sound like an extravagance but Kristian Segerstrale, chief executive of social gaming publisher Playfish, says they were a big hit when the company offered them as an optional extra to its online gaming customers. Unlike traditional console games publishers who command high prices for popular games (Modern Warfare 2: Call of Duty was £60 per copy in some outlets), Playfish has built its entire business model around relatively tiny micro-transactions. Anyone can play its games for free on social networking sites such as Bebo, Facebook and Myspace. Whether you are creating a virtual pet or setting up a restaurant, the basics cost nothing. For extra menu ingredients and special accessories however, players spend between 5 pence and £3. The secret is in sheer numbers. Analysts predicted 10 million global sales during the first two months following the release of Modern Warfare 2 (likely to be its peak) - Playfish has a monthly customer base of 60 million active players around the world. "It's free to play so what we try and do is get as many people engaged in the game as possible," explains Mr Segerstrale. "Then we try to maximise the number of those players that we can offer something interesting to - that they would be willing to pay money for." Now the company has caught the eye of an even bigger fish - gaming giant EA (maker of console kings like the FIFA football games and virtual world The Sims) snapped it up for $300m (£180m) in November 2009. It's free to play so what we try and do is get as many people engaged in the game as possible. Then we try to maximise the number of those players that we can offer something interesting to - that they would be willing to pay money for Kristian Segerstrale, Playfish Big hits The biggest games in its portfolio are Pet Society, where users interact via their virtual pets (this attracts 21 million players each month) and Restaurant City (18 million active players), where people run individual restaurants and in addition to inviting friends to dine there, they can put them on the staff. Who Has the Biggest Brain?, a quiz in which players compare their general knowledge scores, is not such a big hit, attracting just under 2 million monthly users. Around 80% of Playfish players are aged between 18 and 34 (a recent survey carried out in the US found the average adult video gamer to be 35) and the male/female divide is a fairly even split. The developers try to maintain their interest through constant updates. A successful game will have new features every week, explained developer Steve Shipton. "We recently created sticker albums, you could send stickers to your friends - that was a phenomenal success," he told BBC News. The world of social network gaming is a comparatively gentle one. Players are more likely to be growing crops and cooking dinners than slaying monsters and killing bad guys. Additionally players can only interact with others that are already their social networking "friends" - giving the experience a safer, more cosy perception. "The games are simple in the same way that a deck of cards or a board game is simple," says Mr Segerstrale. "The game play doesn't come from the object or the game itself - it's what it enables you to do with your friends. Whether that's competitions, expression(of feelings) or generally socialising in a games environment."

  15. How do I send stickers? Select the sticker icon that you see next to the camera icon! Select the purple sticker pack bookmark. (Or the gold sticker pack icon on the left page of the opening page of your album.) Select the friend(s) you would like to send a Sticker Pack to. Select "Send Pet Society gift request". Select "Send". How do I accept stickers friends have sent? Go to your Facebook requests page: http://www.facebook.com/reqs.php Select to "Accept Gift" where you see a friend has sent you a sticker. You are then taken to a holding screen which shows whether the sticker you just tried to accept was successful or not. From this screen you can select to "Accept more stickers" (green button) which you should use if you have more requests waiting that you would like to accept now, or you can select "Play Pet Society!" (pink button) which you should select if you have no more sticker requests that you want to accept currently! Once you have selected "Play Pet Society!" Pet Society will load. Your pet can then open the sticker pack on the ground, like any other gift. You will be shown the stickers inside and who they are from. Close that window by selecting the green tick. To place your stickers in yoru album, select the sticker button (next to the camera icon). You can then drag and drop your newly collected stickers into your album. (You find the stickers not current in your album below your album). How many stickers can I send to friends a day? This is variable, and is a limit set by Facebook. Currently it appears to be 12. Can I choose which stickers to send friends? No sorry, it's all random! The trophy (for example) states "Complete 5 sticker collections in bronze" what exactly does this mean? A collection is a full double page of stickers. So each full double page will count as one collection towards a trophy. Here are some clarifications on what each trophy definition means: Sticky fingers Complete 5 sticker collections of at least bronze level stickers (i.e. can be any combination of gold, silver and/or bronze) You stuck it out Complete 5 sticker collections of at least silver level stickers (i.e. can be any combination of gold and/or silver) Midas touch Complete 5 sticker collections of gold level stickers (i.e. must all be gold) So you are able to have some silver and gold stickers in your collections (as well as bronze) to complete the bronze trophy! And you are able to have some gold stickers in your collections (as well as silver) to complete the silver trophy! If I replace a silver sticker in my album with a gold sticker, what happens to the original silver sticker? The silver sticker remains 'underneath' the gold sticker, so you will not receive it back. Similarly, if you have a bronze sticker in your album, and you place a silver or gold sticker overtop, the bronze sticker will remain 'underneath' you will not receive it back. Once I've placed a sticker in my album, can I remove it? No sorry you cannot remove any stickers you have placed in your album! What is the sticker recycler? If you end up with duplicate stickers that you don’t want or need, just use the Sticker Recycler! All you have to do is drag unwanted stickers to the recycle icon at the bottom left when your sticker album is open. Once you’ve built up enough Sticker Points you can redeem them for a Bronze, Silver or Gold Sticker Pack. These sticker packs will have random stickers inside but they’ll be of the level indicated on the pack, i.e. gold sticker packs will only contain gold stickers! You can also just keep them in your general un-used sticker section for now if you'd prefer. I've recycled lots of stickers and can redeem a sticker pack, can I gift this? Sticker packs earned through recycling can be gifted to a friend like a normal gift! Can I view my friends' sticker collections? Yes! You can check out your friends’ collections when you visit them; their sticker icon is located above their pet’s health, happiness and hygiene bars. What does the yellow star in the top right hand corner of some stickers in my inventory mean? The yellow stars in the top right corner are the stickers you have just received/accepted, so it's easier for you to spot them amongst those that you've had for awhile! Sticker collections:

Sussex, 2003: When a beautiful blonde woman is found half-drowned on a beach, the article about her in the local newspaper rings alarm bells for beautician, Dale, who shows the police photographs of Lotte Wainright. The girls met working on a cruise ship and their friendship blossomed as they sailed the seas of South America but since leaving the ship, Dale had lost contact with her friend – until now. With no memory before being washed ashore, Lotte must piece together her past and with it the beginning of a dangerous tidal wave of secrets, lies and nightmares. Where has she been? Why did someone want to kill her and what has become of the baby she discovers she has recently given birth to? As Dale helps Lotte face the horrors of her past, their friendship deepens as they are forced to face one last evil together. Have you read this book or any others by this author?
