I was off inspecting the bathroom and making important decisions with OH (such as where the robe hooks will go and the basket in the shower for the toiletries )

I'm loving Zoonie's kitty, who is called Sox, after the little cat we're fostering right now, until he finds a family.


Novia, I tell you, over the last 8 years or so, I've had some enormous lessons to learn, over family - Congratulations again btw on your own special re-birth day

- but the lessons we learn about other family members are SO much harder than the stuff we learn and endure and battle with, on our own behalf -
believe you me, when you get the hang of it, it is SO liberating, and takes a lot of that weight off our shoulders

No, not really. My only brother lives in another state 15 hours away and his wife of 17 years told him she wants a divorce and she wants it immediately and is not interested in counseling. They have 8 and 4 yo boys. My brother is shattered. Just wish we could be there for him.

Another nephew was just suspended from school for the 2nd time within the past 7 days. He is such a delinquent and sees nothing wrong in his behaviors. Makes me so sad.

As for the delinquent - how old is he? My YD was like that for about 7-8 years of her teen years, and yet now at 21 she has quite a progressive and senior post with an international bank (go figure!) She wasted most of her education, despite being very bright - so I guess, from experience, do what you can, and if it can't seem to be done - bide your time...believe you me, it's only worth stressing over the things you can change.

If you can't help change them, just get yourself ready to be there when you're needed

We think my sil is seeing someone else. For about 2 years now she is not home much. She works long hours, goes to the gym at work... runs, etc. When I saw her at Christmas I said I cannot believe she is in a gym as much as she is because she is not thin at all and did not appear buffed either. Now my brother recalls her cutting off phone calls when he comes in the room and texting all the time and many little things. He has asked her if there is someone else and she says no. He has let these long hours of hers go on as he knew she was not real happy and wanted her to feel better about herself. The thing is there is such a difference in them. My brother dropped out of high school, though eventually got his GED. Marcia has 2 degrees, her masters and CPA. She says they do not like the same things. She makes 120 thousand a year....he makes 30 thousand as a carpenter. I had thought this would happen early in their marriage, but when they made it this long I thought....must be true love, lol. I was wrong. Just bothers me so because of the kids....they are my brothers life.

My naughty nephew is 15 and he has been in trouble 7 times this year and I cannot even remember how many times last year. But drug paraphernalia was involved this last times and that worries me the most.

But, as you say, nothing I can do but be there for them. Just hard with the nephew as he is so obnoxious most of the time....I love him but I do not like him much

The only reason I comment is that actually when you're very involved emotionally, it sometimes helps to hear a calm voice from outside of the problem?

My YD was involved with drugs too. I really hate to say this, but often it isn't such a slippery slope, but can be a learning curve - at the end of the day it's that old proverb..that you can lead a horse to water - but you can't make it drink.

Personally, I've never tried illegal drugs, and never felt the need to, but I do know it isn't always a given that it's a road to total despair, and often legal drugs, like alcohol or tobacco, could be.


As for your brother and family, that sounds a bit of a tough call to me really

I'd say it's less about income and more about what gut instinct tells you is right.

Well, nothing I can do but be there for them. Wish I could hug my brother. He calls and talks for hours and mostly repeats himself...he is so lost. But he is strong and I am praying for him. My nephew has a hard road ahead. My sister and her hubby are poor parents at their best. Try too much to be friends and no parents. No real guidance and structure and it has hurt their kids development. His brother is 19 and sits on his but all day playing video and computer games. Has never had a job, cannot drive....is a social misfit. Enrolled in college and got loans then proceeded to not go most of the time and got dropped from all classes. Now he has to repeat all of them. In the past 3 years he has ballooned into over 300 lbs. I worry about these boys all the time. But nothing I can physically do. Thanks for letting me vent. I have to go now but I really do appreciate your input. I will continue to hope that things will change for the better for my nephews.

I do know that place where your sister has been, however, as a parent, when push came to shove, I stood firm and was determined that the tail wasn't going to wag the dog - guess what, at the end of the day, our daughter has turned a corner and said 'you were right'

I think today so many parents are worried about actually doing the parenting, but at the end of the day kids of all ages, need some format.

You always know where to find me to offload and have a kind word.
