  1. Bit of a long story so I'll narrow it down.

Our Emma's car is burning oil at a rate of a 1ltr per week. I've been on the Rover MG ZR forum to find out how I can sort it as she has had no end of problems with this car since she bought it.

Known for head gasket failure which did happen last year also when she bought the car 4 years ago in the 1st week the cambelt snapped and I think her engine was sorted for around £500

The car is in super condition bodywise and the car pulls..starts as it should but there is blue smoke when she starts up.

So far I've narrowed it down to the Valve Seals as there is post after post on this on the Rover Forum, ohh and incidently I've asked them on there a few weeks back but nobody can be arsed to answer my question.

Right this is where I'm getting at....I've been reading shitloads on Google and I've stumbled across a post from a mechanic and he goe's on to tell you that changing these Valve seals can be done without taking the head off.

He say's if you wizz a plug out and use a rope you can put this down the spark plug hole and get the 1st piston to TDC and with the pressure from the piston will keep the valve pressed up so there is no need to strip down. Also he rekons you can use a compressor and blow air into the cylinder which will also hold the valve were it should be without dropping into the cylinder.

But if one happens to fall in you then need to take the head off.

I don't have enough time to strip it as she needs the car for work. I'm just wandering if it is possible to do the way I said above or check the link below

There is also stuff on the market "Valve conditioner" which expands the seals but I think it's only temporary.

  2. My MOT is due this Friday.

As a general rule I ride to a place
I've out of our Town about a 20 mile round trip. They've always been
good. Anyway a m8 of mine said to me to give his cousin a call in a
testing station in my home Town and mention who had sent you.

    So I
rang the garage up today had a bit of a natter and he said bring it in
this Saturday. I asked hime how much ? ....he said it's £25.00

Bearing in mind my car has just been MOT's and it's a bit bigger than the Bandit and that cost me £40.00 for the car.

Now the place I generally take it charge me £22.00.

Just want to see here how much other members pay as I seem to find a lot of discrepency between Garages for some reason Cool

  3. As you may know I've had a minor problem with my B12 running wise, well it wasn't too bad rideable etc as I went to Ravens 140 mile round trip, just silly little things like popping and farting at lights and rev counter needle up and down a little, like running a bit lumpy I would say.

Just got home from the gym as I didn't managed to get out on her last Saturday after 1 thing or another, and sorting the valves out for the 3rd time. Got to say she's running like she just come out of the showroom. Smooth all the way through the throttle and even through Town I got caught at all the Traffic lights and she never missed a beat ticking over, solid as a rock at 1200 rpm

    Well chuffed Very Happy

  4. Update @ 16.24 16th April.

All done @ 3pm bout flippin time to Laughing

She sounds so much smoother now, adjusted the carbs yesterday thanks to Rob, synced the carbs again today after checking the valves, no banging in the cylinder now just after tickover

Did 3 short videos, 1st one is before I checked the carbs well just after installing the valve cover, 2nd one is of the gauges showing slightly out of sync then the 3rd is after I adjusted them.

Many thanks Rob for purseaveering with me to get this sorted...thanks pal
