R.E.M. / Rapid Eye Movement

(David Cook, David Hodges)

Give me one more quiet night
'fore this loud morning gets it right
And does me in.
Does this story have an ending?
`Cause I'm needing to escape
And kill the blinding lights of day
To try again,
Close my eyes and start descending.

'Cause I, I can't seem to find
a way back inside every last thought of love we made
That still keeps me awake
Still keeps me from everything we had
That I'm trying to get back, trying to get back

We keep floating towards the floor
Stuck in this pattern evermore
Of sink or swim
But the oxygen is proving
More than words could ever say
To put these memories away
So this is it
These rapid eyes will keep on moving.
These rapid eyes will keep on moving.

'Cause I, I can't seem to find
a way back inside every last thought of love we made
That still keeps me awake
Still keeps me from everything we had
That I'm trying to get back, trying to get back

Give me one more quiet night
'Fore this loud morning gets it right
And does me in.
Is this story worth forgetting?

'Cause I, I can't seem to find
a way back inside every last thought of love we made
That still keeps me awake
Still keeps me from everything we had
That I'm trying to get back, trying to get back
Trying to get back, trying to get back.

...

Mayday

lol, Dinna, we had the same thought but I hadn't seen your thread, so I'm merging them Very Happy

Although we don't know much about the song, David has said the album's title is from a lyric from this particular song in an interview with Mix 101.4 interview

"Give me one more quiet night before this loud morning gets it right and does me in"

The only clue we do have is that it was the song DC&TA soundchecked at Busch Gardens but didn't perform. Listen to it in Jaimie's (CookifiedTexan) recording and a link provided by Daina (ReallyCookin)

David hasn't mentioned it, but I have a feeling this could be a co-write with Andy and Neal or something David wrote on his own. Just a feeling...

Also, in his interview with Kelly he mentioned it is the closing track of the album. Finding a parallel with Permanent and A Daily AntheM closing DCTR.

I believe I will really love this song. Heart Even though we don't have the "official" version yet, something about it gets to me. The lyrics really sound like him (and possibly Andy/Neal). It must be pretty meaningful to David since he named the album after it.

"Give me one more quiet night before
this loud morning gets it right
and does me in."

I'm sure a lot of people can relate to that feeling. Like when you don't want the night to end because you don't want to face what will be there when you wake up. Beautiful line.

This just screams David to me, the real David. This is the kind of music that I signed up for. Great Haven't listened to the soundcheck, but I like the lyrics.. They have a bit of a We're Only Honest vibe to them...
Also if it's the last song, it's like he's saying it's his last chance for some damn peace and quiet ("give me one more quiet night") before the album gets released and the wonderful shitstorm of concerts and fans screaming recommences in his life ("this loud morning does me in"). Haha.. Hence the album title maybe. But of course he would describe in a much more eloquent David way than I did Razz

You described it pretty well, Sarah!

In the E Entertainment segment, he said "you go on stage every night and you have thousands of people making all this noise and all of a sudden it's just [silence noise, lol]. I think this record represents me being in my own head a little bit". He also declared that this last year allowed him to process many things he wasn't able to during 2009 crazy touring.

All of this is really tough, deep stuff he's talking about and sharing!

I can relate very much to those lyrics, they say exactly what i've been going through in the last 4 years. And I'm with you on this, when you say a beautiful line. Heart

But if it is called "This Loud Morning" then why is it in a thread called "Rapid Eye Movement?"
Just curious! Very Happy

^^^What Anat said. David mentioned in an interview that the album's title came from the lyrics of a song called "Rapid Eye Movement" or "REM". That's why the song has its own thread Very Happy

The lyrics are gorgeous - full of his emotions - his soul - his pain !
I have already my tissues box for the first time I listen him singing this song.
Maybe he can surprise us and sing next week at Concert for Hope !!
Lucky ones who'll be there ! Melt

I don't think he'll be singing any more songs from the album before it's released, though one can dream drunken

I'm pretty sure this song will be the end of me! *passes tissues around tissue10.gif *

P.S.: How is it we never heard nothing about this song or it being registered or anything about it? scratch

Even though I couldn't make out the lyrics, just the music of this one and the emotion in his voice are enough to make me LOVE this song. I can't wait to hear the recorded version. As much as I love the live versions, I can only take so much bad sound.

Yes, this sounds like it would have fit right in on AH. I am seriously excited about this song.

I'd appreciate it if someone can check this part of the lyrics. I'm not hearing anything like we had before!

Before:
Would we throw ourselves a buoy
since we've battled here before
To sink or swim but the ax’s head, it’s moving
More than words could ever say

What I hear:
"We keep floating towards the floor
Thinking (?) this battle (pattern ?) never more
Of sink or swim, but the oxygen is proving
More than words could ever say"

I also made some other adjustments. Pls check them out. Thanks Very Happy

Miss you too, Made! Gosh, I miss hanging out here, but RL's been waaaaaay too crazy!

According to the Cookistas:

We keep floating towards the floor
Stuck in this pattern evermore of sink or swim
But the oxygen is proving more than words could ever say

This is what I hear..... any thoughts??

Give me one more quiet night
Before this loud morning gets it right
And does me in.
Does this story have an ending ?
`Cause I'm needing to escape
And kill the blinding lights of day
To try again, close my eyes and start descending

I, I can't seem to find our way back INSIDE,
Every last thought of love we made
That still keeps me awake
Still keeps me from everything that we had
That I'm trying to get back,
Trying to get back

WE KEEP FLOATING TOWARDS THE FLOOR
STUCK IN THIS PATTERN NEVERMORE
OF SINK OR SWIM
BUT THE OXYGEN IS PROVING
MORE THEN WORDS COULD EVER SAY
TO PUT THESE MEMORIES AWAY
SO THIS IS IT
THESE RAPID EYES WILL KEEP ON MOVING

THESE RAPID EYES WILL KEEP ON MOVING

'Cause I, I can't seem to find our way back INSIDE,
Every last thought of love we made
That still keeps me awake
Still keeps me from everything we had
That I'm trying to get back,
That I'm trying to get back
That I'm trying to get back

Give me one more quiet night
Before this loud morning gets it right
And does me in.
Is this story worth forgetting?

'Cause I, I can't seem to find our way back INSIDE
Every last thought of love we made
That still keeps me awake
Still keeps me from everything we had
That I'm trying to get back,
Trying to get back.
Trying to get back.
Trying to get back.

I agree with what Tricia posted except:

Still keeps me from everything that we had (no "that" on any of these lines)
I can't seem to find a way back inside ("a" instead of "our")

One of my favorites. Loved it from that first soundcheck. I like the way it goes right along with Circadian, bringing the album full circle. I get goosebumps every time the choir sings "somebody save me" at the end. Just...wow. I'm Not Worthy!

I'm obsessed with this song.
Whenever the piano ending comes on, I ALWAYS hold my breath and wait with my eyes wide open as if something bad would happen. I don't know what's with it.

I believe this is officially my favorite song on This Loud Morning. It's just too lovely. And it's really the perfect closing to the album, just as A Daily AntheM was to DCTR. I can picture him ending his concerts with it, with everyone singing along. Heart

The second chorus is such a throw back. Very reminiscent of AH, like Mrs.DavidCook said, and even Axium. I'm going on record and saying this is my favorite.

I feel like I haven't listened to this properly yet but I'm liking it.... The rockiness of it. And of course that epic fucking ending. So haunting and eerie and beautiful.

You know, given the sleeping/dreaming theme on this album, he REALLY should have put We're Only Honest When We're Sleeping on there, and taken one of the poppy numbers out. That would have brought the album up a notch I think.

I like "Is this story worth forgetting?" Good line. The lyrics in general on this song are pretty good, first impressions.

So REM is the phase in sleeping where most dreaming occurs. So the song is about wanting to go to sleep and use dreaming to go back to the happier times in our life... but sometimes you're so haunted by the present/awake state, you can't find happiness even in dreams? And of course in real life, we're all trying to get something back that we may have lost. Something like that maybe. I like. I think it would be really great and epic live if I ever get to see it. Great

How dare you not love it too! Razz Haha, kidding. I'm not sure what it is about REM that gets me, but I think it has a pretty epic vibe to it (now I sound like David). I listen to it on my iPod or in the car, and let it drown everything else out, and get lost in the music of it. Heart
