How to deal with Halloween

Hi all :)

I was just wondering how you guys deal with Halloween if you get children coming to your door what do you do or say?

Our daughter understands that we don't celebrate it, but sometimes it is hard if other children, especially her cousins might come to the door.

We are in Australia, so it has only just started to be celebrated here, but is getting more intense each year. Previously if anyone knocked I was just nice to the kids but said "I'm sorry but we don't celebrate Halloween and so we don't have any candy in the house (which was true)". It just feels like giving candy is partaking in it to some degree and I don't believe in encouraging it.

I'm not sure how it is in Australia, but here in the states the easiest way is to just leave for that hour....or you could just shut the lights off. When the porch light and other lights are off here, people just skip that home.

I would go to a Christian store and buy a bunch of tracks and hand those out. Then, I'd explain to my children why because I always want to get mine aboard in the quest to save people's souls so they understand and are even zealous about it themselves. On the other hand, our churches usually have "Harvest Parties" so that's where we would be.

That's interesting they only trick or treat for a certain 'hour' at night - I don't think we have a set time here.

Hello Ruth, this year was the first year I've struggled with this. I decided to just write on a large note saying "ATTENTION:This Home does not partake in the celebration of Halloween". No one knocked because they could see the sign before they walked to the door. This was the best way because it helped me to avoid the awkward speech. :)

We haven't had this problem since we moved to the country several years ago....it seems they all trick or treat in town. When we lived in town it was a very different story! The first few years we lived there, we handed out candy WITH tracts. Then, when we became more involved in various ministries through the years, we used that night to host an alternative fun night for the children and teens of the church and thier friends. Many times we included puppet shows or Christian videos that shared the gospel.
