To be honest your would better off with a 600 Bandit or Fazer but I know what you mean . I bought a XJ550 a few year back as a streetfighter YICS motor was good in there day but what a horrid thing it was after using a 600 bandit for a year before.

Don't go 2nd hand buy the best you can aford even if it takes a wile. The last thing you want is the chain to snap at speed and lock the the engine or rear wheel up,or poke an hole in the crank case!Don't mess about with junk!its yer life mate..

It may be that the jets ok not blocked the backfiring could be that the engine sat for ages with the exhaust valve open and now its not seating properly after its opened and closed a few times it might reseat it self. when a single cylinder bike is stood for a long time its best to crank it over so that it's on the compresion stroke and that both valves are in the closed position it helps to keep the valves seated.My Norton dose it but after a few miles it sorts it self out.just a thought........

You might be right Stu, unscrew lid & wash Bandit drive chain before re lubing it.
