battery or charging issue

I got this 5 year old bike over x-mas so I do not know whether it is the original battery. My problem is after giving the battery a full charge it starts ok but after half an hour riding it will not start. Its been a progressive decline as a couple of months ago it would start 3-4 times before needing a charge. When I connect the voltmeter whilst the bike is running it reads 12.70 v creeping up very slowly. How do I diagnose whether it is a charging issue or need a new battery as they don't come cheap. Thanks

Hi I just bought what was advertised as a workshop manual but is labelled as a service manual. Are they different in the level of detail I should expect??
