  4. The crank and camshafts. White metal (babbit) bearings are softer than the crankshaft steel and are designed to wear. When badly worn they expose the copper backing to the bearing. They also trap small abrasive particles in the bearing material to prevent them causing damage. However in a badly maintained engine these will be uncovered as the white metal wears away and then you have something akin to grinding paste. This will also result in increased running clearances and a lowering of the oil pressure lubricating the bearings. Its always a good idea to examine the oil taken out. This is standard practice for fleet vehicles. Small amounts of shiney filings/slivers are normal wear and tear.
  5. If there was any water or emulsified oil it could have been condensation or a breather problem. Oils today will last way beyond their normal service date. Used to test them in a laboratory. 5-6k for a modern semi or fully synthetic oil is no problem. Ive always changed both car at bike at 5k. Never had a lube or engine problem in 50 yrs. Ive stripped and analysed engines that have never had an oil change, just a top up and most have been within tolerance.

    Newbie

welcome to the forum Steve. One of the advantages of being retired is that I'm out every day on the bike. At this rate I'll be needing new tyres to go to the TT
  14. And lets hope its punched, bored and countersunk!!!! OOOOh the pain, the pain!!
  15. Another week and I'll be there to watch him. Cant wait. Bookings for 2013 TT ferries open next Monday folks.
  16. God bless your stomach Stue. Did you go by bike? Bet the handling was a bit dodgy
  17. Simplest way Dave is to use a relay. Its like two circuits in one unit, one goes from battery to grips and that copes with the heavy current. The other is like a trigger which is best powered by an ignition controlled circuit and only takes milliamps to operate. If you want any help let me know. Im retired so time doesnt really matter and Im not far away (spent many years teaching low voltage vehicle and plant machine electrics) and dont buy any relays and wiring as Ive got some. So do you think the way I have wired them up is acceptable ? (above post) You've got me worrying a bit now If its via the ignition it should be fine Robbie. The ignition system draws very little current and the headlights that come on as well will be via a relay so the current draw is only milliamps for that circuit
  18. And I bet you still had a starter and a pudding Stue
